Isabel Croxatto Galería, plataforma internacional de arte contemporáneo con sede en Santiago de Chile, presenta Sweeter than Roses, exposición individual del artista chileno radicado en Los Ángeles, California, Víctor Castillo. La muestra reúne 12 fotografías en blanco y negro de modelos pin-up de las décadas de 1960 y 1970, las que han sido delicadamente intervenidas por el artista, y que forman parte de su extensa y variada colección personal de imágenes.
En Sweeter than Roses, Víctor Castillo se inspira en la canción homónima del compositor inglés Henry Purcell (1659-1695), en cuya atmósfera íntima y romántica intervino de forma delicada, con acrílico y tinta china, la “piel fotográfica” de modelos pin-up –como Virginia Rogers, Karen Mourning y Shawn Devereaux– presentes en una serie de 12 fotografías de destacados fotógrafos de las décadas de 1960 y 1970, como Ron Vogel y Fred Enke, que el artista ha coleccionado a lo largo de los años.
En ellas, el artista plasma, a modo de tatuajes, sus emblemáticos personajes y estética; por una parte, citando su propia obra y, por otra, rescatando bocetos nunca antes utilizados. La obra rinde tributo al desenfado y naturalidad, resignificando el erotismo de la época a partir de la dualidad entre lo sensual y lo romántico, entre el deseo y la ternura.
Los largos periodos de encierro del artista en su residencia y taller en Los Ángeles en medio de la pandemia, fueron el espacio y tiempo propicio para explorar, a modo de una película de Fellini, recuerdos de su infancia, entre ellos los primeros encuentros inocentes con imágenes provocadoras de cuerpos femeninos en las revistas en el quiosco de la esquina, o los calendarios en los muros del almacén de barrio o del taller mecánico. Es en este espacio que Víctor Castillo se permite una vez más experimentar con la libertad de un eximio dibujante, pintor y grafitero, sobre soportes que trascienden la tela y el muro, reutilizando materiales encontrados, como billetes, grabados, afiches y, en el caso de Sweeter than Roses, fotografías antiguas que el artista colecciona.
Acerca de la obra, Víctor Castillo comenta: “Me interesa crear un espacio en donde se pueda revivir un poco esa nostalgia por la ‘época dorada de la ilustración’ a través de mi trabajo. Estas imágenes, que antiguamente eran eróticas o pornográficas, hoy en día las veo casi de forma escultórica; me recuerdan aquella fascinación por la complicidad del primer deseo hacia otro cuerpo. Por otra parte, desde hace años tengo una carpeta con un gran archivo, en donde voy guardando bocetos de pinturas no realizadas, dibujos que jamás pasé en limpio, diseños descartados anteriormente que mantengo a mano y que no han salido antes a la luz, a los que hoy he recurrido para intervenir estas imágenes”.
Junto a las piezas originales que conforman Sweeter than Roses, se ha producido una edición de lujo, limitada, firmada y numerada de 50 cajas con las 12 obras que componen la colección, impresas con tintas de conservación de museo en papel Photo Baryta 100% algodón de 340 gramos, producidas en los talleres de Digital Gravura en Santiago.
En paralelo, Isabel Croxatto Galería ha editado un catálogo bilingüe de la exposición inspirado en los calendarios de pin-ups de la época, que contará con reseñas de las modelos y fotógrafos que crearon las imágenes originales, junto con un texto escrito especialmente para éste por la estadounidense Dian Hanson, editora de la división de publicaciones eróticas de la mundialmente reconocida casa editorial Taschen. El catálogo, diseñado por Estudio Cinco, contará con un tiraje limitado de 100 ejemplares numerados.
Sweeter than Roses es la cuarta exposición individual de Víctor Castillo junto a Isabel Croxatto Galería en Santiago, y se suma a su participación con proyectos especiales en prestigiosas ferias de arte en Hong Kong y Turquía. Su anterior muestra en la galería, The Invisible Cage, presentada entre noviembre de 2018 y enero de 2019, le valió ser reconocido como Artista del Año en 2019 por Revista ED. En 2020, Víctor Castillo fue uno de los once finalistas para la Beca Fundación Actual MAVI. Dentro de las próximas semanas inaugurará su exposición Somewhere Over the Rainbow en Hel Mel Studios, galería de arte del reconocido actor Val Kilmer en Hollywood, que coincidirá con la publicación de una monografía sobre su obra.
Isabel Croxatto Galería, international contemporary art platform based in Santiago, Chile, presents Sweeter than Roses, solo exhibition by the Chilean artist based in Los Angeles, California, Víctor Castillo. The exhibition features 12 black and white photographs of pin-up models from the 1960s and 1970s, which have been delicately intervened by the artist and are part of his extensive and varied personal collection of images.
In Sweeter than Roses, Víctor Castillo is inspired by the song of the same name by the English composer Henry Purcell (1659-1695), which created an intimate and romantic atmosphere for the artist to delicately intervene, with acrylic and ink, the “photographic skin” of pin-up models –such as Virginia Rogers, Karen Mourning and Shawn Devereaux– present in a collection of 12 photographs by prominent photographers of the 1960s and 1970s, such as Ron Vogel and Fred Enke, which the artist has compiled over the years. In them, the artist depicts, in the form of tattoos, his emblematic characters and aesthetics, citing his own work as well as revisiting sketches that had never been used before. The work pays tribute to the carefree and natural, resignifying the eroticism of the time through the duality between the sensual and the romantic, desire and tenderness.
The extended periods of the confinement in his residence and studio in Los Angeles (CA) amid the pandemic were the ideal space and time for the artist to explore, in the fashion of a Fellini film, memories of his childhood, among them the first innocent encounters with provocative images of female bodies in the magazines at the corner kiosk, or the calendars on the walls of the grocery store or the mechanic’s workshop. It’s in this setting that Víctor Castillo once again allows himself to experiment with the freedom of a gifted drawer, painter and graffiti artist, on media that transcend the canvas and the wall, repurposing found materials such as banknotes, prints, posters and, in the case of Sweeter than Roses, old photographs that the artist collects.
About the work, Victor Castillo comments: “I’m interested in creating a space where you can relive a bit of that nostalgia for the ‘golden age of illustration’ through my work. These images, which in the past were erotic or pornographic, nowadays I see them almost in a sculptural way; they remind me of that fascination for the complicity of the first desire for another body. Furthermore, I have kept a folder with a large archive for years, where I store sketches of unexecuted paintings, drawings that I have never finished, previously discarded designs that I maintain at hand and that have not come to light before, which I have used today to intervene these images.”
Together with the original artworks that comprise Sweeter than Roses, a deluxe, limited, signed and numbered edition of 50 box sets have been produced containing the 12 images of the collection, printed with archival ink on Photo Baryta 340 gr 100% cotton paper, manufactured in the workshops of Digital Gravura in Santiago.
In addition, Isabel Croxatto Galería will publish a bilingual catalogue of the exhibition inspired by the pin-up calendars of the period, featuring reviews of the models and photographers who created the original images, along with a text written especially for it by the American editor Dian Hanson, Sexy Book Editor at Taschen. The catalogue, designed by Estudio Cinco, will have a limited print run of 100 numbered copies and will be launched during the opening of the exhibition. Sweeter than Roses is Víctor Castillo’s fourth solo exhibition with Isabel Croxatto Galería in Santiago and follows his participation with special projects in prestigious art fairs in Hong Kong and Turkey. His previous show at the gallery, The Invisible Cage, presented between November 2018 and January 2019, earned him recognition as Artist of the Year in 2019 by ED Magazine. In 2020, Víctor Castillo was one of the eleven finalists for the MAVI Fundación Actual Fellowship. In the coming weeks, he will open his exhibition Somewhere Over the Rainbow at Hel Mel Studios, renowned actor Val Kilmer’s art gallery in Hollywood, which will coincide with the publication of a monograph on his work.
